In 1960, Ed Connery began a transfer of operations from the St. Vital (Winnipeg) area to Portage la Prairie. The relocation was prompted by a need to find better soil types for mechanical vegetable production.
In 1964, the farm was incorporated and Ed changed the name from J Connery & Son to Connery’s Riverdale Farms Ltd.
Over the years, Ed’s sons learnt to farm and manage the operations
In 1986, Ed went into politics and the boys took over with Doug managing the warehouse and marketing while Jeff managed all the field operations. Beth (Jeff’s wife) took over the books from Bev (Ed’s wife).
Doug and Jeff’s children were involved in farming from the time they were little as well. Helping to field scout or check on the warehouse was a fun family outing with their fathers. Over time, each of the children learned alongside farm employees doing everything from carrot grading to irrigation to picking strawberries.
In 2011, we lost Doug.
In 2012, we lost Jeff.
Currently, Beth runs the farm with her children, Sam and Chris learning to grow into their future business. Ed and Bev continue to offer support and advice during their retirement.
